Brinjal

The brinjal is the one vegetable named in the verse on its own account: many seeds, and, the commentary adds, a tendency to sleep and to desire.
Vāyaṅgaṇa in the Prakrit, vṛntāka in Sanskrit, vaiṅgaṇ on the wall. The first reason is the reason for many-seeded fruit; the second is the commentary's own, that aubergines are aphrodisiac and make one sleep too much, which puts the item half on the plate's fourth sector, the eater. The Digambara lists refuse it unsplit, with jujubes and betel-nuts.
