Pulse in raw curd
A pulse mixed with raw milk, curd or buttermilk is refused because, the commentary says, beings arise in it too small for anyone but an omniscient to see; the verse names the dish, ghola-vaḍā, and means the rule.
Dvidala, two-halved: the commentary defines it as any pulse that splits in two when ground and yields no oil - gram, lentil, mung, urad, the beans. Mixed with go-rasa, the milk group, in its raw state, the two together breed life at once. Ghola-vaṭaka is a vaḍā in buttermilk, and Siddhasena says the verse names it as an upalakṣaṇa, one case standing for the whole class, āma-gorasa-sampṛkta-dvidala, which Hemacandra lists under its own name.
The practical rule that follows is the one every Jain kitchen knows: curd with a pulse only if the curd was first brought to the boil, because cooking ends what raw mixing starts. It is the same reason as butter in a different pair.
