Hell 4 of 7
Paṅkaprabhā
पङ्कप्रभा
The mud earth. Cold begins to appear here alongside the heat.
Both extremes are present in this earth. It is also the last from which a soul can be reborn directly as a human capable of liberation in that same life; from the fifth earth down, that door narrows sharply.
The hell-beings themselves inflict much of the suffering on each other, and the Paramādhārmika demons, a class of Asurakumāra, add to it in the upper earths.
Its proper name is Añjanā; Paṅkaprabhā is the descriptive one, naming what the earth is made of or looks like. It holds 7 storeys of hells stacked one below another.
