Birthplace of one Tīrthaṅkara · Chandravati
Candrapurī
चन्द्रपुरी
Candraprabha's city, a village on the Gaṅgā a little below Vārāṇasī.
By Hemacandra's reckoning, as the atlas carries it, Candraprabha was born here. Chandravati, downstream of Varanasi, is the pilgrimage tradition's Candrapurī, and the temple to Candraprabha stands on the river. The identification is the tradition's, not archaeology's.
The dot on the map is Chandravati, on the Gaṅgā below Varanasi; the identification is the pilgrimage tradition's. Every site in this chapter is graded the same way, and the section says why.
