Birthplace of one Tīrthaṅkara · Sahet-Mahet
Śrāvastī
श्रावस्ती
Sambhavanātha's city, and one the Buddhists knew as well as the Jains.
By Hemacandra's reckoning, as the atlas carries it, Sambhavanātha was born here. The ruined city at Sahet-Mahet has been excavated; the Jain temple to Sambhavanātha stands at the site, beside the Buddhist monastery of Jetavana. This is one of the identifications settled by the spade.
The dot on the map is Sahet-Mahet, Shravasti district, Uttar Pradesh; the identification is settled by archaeology. Every site in this chapter is graded the same way, and the section says why.
