Lavaṇa Samudra

लवण समुद्र

The salt ocean, a ring 2,00,000 yojana wide, wrapped around Jambūdvīpa.

Its water is salt, and its floor slopes down from the shores toward the middle, where it reaches 1,000 yojana deep. At the centre stands a raised body of water 16,000 yojana high, held up and pushed down twice a day by the Pātāla vessels beneath it — the Jain account of tides.

Fifty-six antardvīpas sit in this ocean, in the north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west quadrants off the ends of the Himavān and Śikharī ranges.

Four suns and four moons circle above it.
