The roots

Whatever roots below the soil and grows again from a piece: the verses name the elephant-foot yam and the vajra yam first, then the carrot and three sedge-tubers, and the recitation adds a heading over them all, savva kanda-jāi.
Sūraṇa-kanda is Amorphophallus, the elephant-foot yam; vajra-kanda a second yam; garjara the carrot; kaseruka a water-tuber, thega and ārdra-mustā two sedges with tubers, the last the nutgrass. The heading, all root-kinds, is what brings in everything the verses do not name - the onion above all, and the potato and sweet potato - and what lets the dried root through, since a root dried is a root that will not grow. The marks are the test; the yams, radish and garlic have entries of their own.
