The sky · the 184 lanes

The moving field

चरक्षेत्र

The sun's whole year happens in a belt 510 48/61 yojana wide: 184 lanes, walked outward to winter and back inward to summer, one lane a day.

The belt runs 180 yojana inside Jambūdvīpa's shore and 330 48/61 out over Lavaṇa — the 48/61 being the width of the sun's own disc hanging past the last lane. The innermost lane is a circle 99,640 yojana across; the outermost is 1,00,660; the whole drama of the year is played on that half-per-cent of the world's width.

On the innermost lane the day is 18 muhūrtas and the night 12; on the outermost the day is 12 and the night 18; every lane outward costs the day exactly 2/61 of a muhūrta. The sun shifts one lane per day — 183 days out, 183 days back — and that walk is the year, its solstices the two turnings.

The moon keeps a field of its own in the same belt, crossed in 15 lanes. No tilt, no orbit, no sphere: the seasons are a god pacing a corridor.
