Summit lakes

The six lakes

षट् द्रह

One lake on the summit of each boundary mountain. Every great river in Jambūdvīpa starts in one of them.

Padma, Mahāpadma, Tigiñcha, Kesarī, Mahāpuṇḍarīka, Puṇḍarīka. Their sizes double inward and halve outward exactly as the mountains do: Padma is 1,000 yojana long and 500 wide, Mahāpadma doubles it, Tigiñcha doubles again, and then the northern three mirror the southern three.

Each lake has a lotus at its centre made of earth-bodied jewels, one yojana across, rooted ten yojana down in the water. On the pericarp of that lotus stands a palace, and in the palace lives a goddess. Around her are 140,115 further lotuses holding her retinue.

The six goddesses are Śrī, Hrī, Dhṛti, Kīrti, Buddhi and Lakṣmī. Each lives one palyopama. The first three attend the Indra of Saudharma, the last three the Indra of Īśāna.

Each lake has four gateways at the four directions, and rivers leave through them. Padma and Puṇḍarīka send out three rivers each; the four middle lakes send out two. Three plus two plus two plus two plus two plus three is fourteen — the fourteen great rivers.
