The elephant Indra rides to a Tīrthaṅkara is not an animal but a god who takes the shape — and he is as long as Meru is tall.
Hemacandra describes him once, and then goes inward and does not stop. A body a lakh of yojanas long, shining “like Meru which had become alive”. Eight tusks to each face, a lotus-pond on every tusk, eight lotuses in every pond, eight petals to every lotus, and on each petal eight companies of actors, dancing. How many faces he has the text never says. Follows the Śvetāmbara reckoning throughout.
