The Salt Sea
A sea a thousand yojana deep, a wall of water sixteen thousand high standing down its middle, and four jars a lakh deep beneath it whose breathing is the tide.
Lavaṇa Samudra is the ring of salt water around Jambūdvīpa, two lakh yojana wide. Its floor slopes to 1,000 yojana deep and then the sea rises instead: a crest 16,000 yojana high that swells and subsides twice a day. Beneath it, sunk into the floor, stand four Pātāla-vessels of diamond, each 1,00,000 yojana deep — a hundred times the sea — with wind below, water above, and the wind's stirring as the tide. One lakh seventy-four thousand nāga gods hold the wall to its bound; their Indras sit on eight mountains in the sea; the ocean's lord, Susthita, keeps his island in the west.
