The four Velādhārin mountains
Gostūpa, Udakābhāsa, Śaṅkha and Udakasīmaka: four mountains of gold, aṅka, silver and crystal standing in the salt sea 42,000 yojana from the shore, 1,721 yojana high.
At the four cardinal points, 42,000 yojana out into Lavaṇa, four mountains rise from the water: Gostūpa of gold in the east, Udakābhāsa of aṅka in the south, Śaṅkha of silver in the west, Udakasīmaka of crystal in the north. Each is 1,721 yojana high, 1,022 across at the base and 424 at the summit, with gleaming palaces on top.
They are the seats of the Indras of the Velādhārins, each Indra named for his mountain. Beside the wall of water — 16,000 high — they are specks; the view draws them at true proportion so that the specks can be seen for what they are.
Hemacandra lists the four materials in that order; one modern summary of the same passage pairs them differently, and this atlas keeps the text's order.
