The Tīrthas

तीर्थ

The twenty-four on the ground: the sixteen cities they were born in and the five places they left from, on the coast of the subcontinent, with the pilgrimage tradition's word for where each stands today.

Every other map in the encyclopedia is scripture's geometry. This one is a coastline, because the kalyāṇaka-bhūmis are in Bharata, in the part of it history reaches. Hemacandra's cities of birth and places of nirvāṇa, already in the descent chapter, are put on the ground: sixteen cities, five places, twenty of the twenty-four leaving from one hill. Each modern identification is graded - settled, the tradition's, or disputed - and Aṣṭāpada is drawn off the map, because the texts give it no place. Four later temple tīrthas are marked apart from the scriptural sites. Follows the Śvetāmbara reckoning throughout.

All of it is also walkable as an interactive atlas of nested maps.
