Birthplace of two Tīrthaṅkaras · Varanasi
Vārāṇasī
वाराणसी
Two of the twenty-four were born here: Supārśva, the seventh, and Pārśva, the twenty-third, whose name the hill Parasnath still carries.
By Hemacandra's reckoning, as the atlas carries it, Supārśvanātha and Pārśvanātha were born here. The two births are kept apart in the city: Supārśvanātha's temple at Bhadainī, Pārśvanātha's at Bhelupur. Pārśva's omniscience is placed here too, so the city holds three kalyāṇakas. Two more birth cities, Siṃhapurī and Candrapurī, are within a morning's walk.
The dot on the map is Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh; the identification is settled by archaeology. Every site in this chapter is graded the same way, and the section says why.
