The Sixty-Three
शलाकापुरुष
Twenty-four Tīrthaṅkaras, twelve Cakravartins and nine sets of three — sixty-three positions held by sixty people, once in every half-turn of the wheel.
The tradition ranks their strength precisely, in a chain of multiples running from one strong man to an Indra, and then refuses to give a figure for a Tīrthaṅkara. What the ranking shows is how little ranking matters: all sixty-three sit inside a single factor of four, while their destinations run from the seventh hell to Siddhaśilā. Every Vāsudeva goes to hell — Kṛṣṇa and Lakṣmaṇa among them — and their gentler elder brothers, Balarāma and Rāma, do not. Follows the Śvetāmbara reckoning throughout.
