Birthplace of three Tīrthaṅkaras · Hastinapur
Hastināpura
हस्तिनापुर
Three of the twenty-four were born here, one after another - Śānti, Kunthu and Ara - and each of the three was a cakravartin before he was a Tīrthaṅkara.
By Hemacandra's reckoning, as the atlas carries it, Śāntinātha, Kunthunātha and Aranātha were born here. Hastināpura is the Kuru capital of the Mahābhārata and one of the identifications not in doubt. The three are the only Tīrthaṅkaras who were also universal emperors, which is why the sixty-three positions are held by sixty people.
The dot on the map is Hastinapur, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh; the identification is settled by archaeology. Every site in this chapter is graded the same way, and the section says why.
