मन्थान
The third samaya: a second plane north and south crosses the first, and the soul is the shape of a churning-stick - the whole universe except the four corners between the blades.
The Śvetāmbara texts call it manthāna, the churn; the Digambara texts call the same state pratara, a sheet, and the samaya chapter used that word until this chapter corrected it. In plan it is a cross; what is left unfilled are the antarālas, the interstices, which the fourth samaya takes.
From here the soul works through the karmic body alone, and from here until the fifth samaya it takes nothing in.
