Avagāhanā · two-thirds of the last body

The siddha's extent

अवगाहना

A siddha has no body and no matter of any kind, but a soul is not a point: it pervades a region of space, and the region a freed soul pervades is two-thirds of the height of the body it left. The texts call that its avagāhanā, its extent - not a body, the space it fills. So the siddhas' region at the crown is 333⅓ dhanuṣ deep: two-thirds of 500, the tallest a human is.

A soul is made of innumerable space-points and always occupies some region; in a body it spreads to fill that body, the way a lamp's light fills whatever room it is in and, put in a jar, fills the jar. That contracting and expanding is the soul's own power, not the body's. In the śaileśī, at the very end, the soul's points draw inward and fill the body's hollows - the mouth, the belly, the passages - and that densifying shrinks its extent by a third. Freed, it keeps exactly that extent, with nothing left inside it to fill: not a body, but an outline, as a shadow has an outline and no substance. The Uttarādhyayana sets the fraction at two-thirds. From the descent chapter's own heights: Ṛṣabha, 500 dhanuṣ, rests in 333⅓ dhanuṣ; Mahāvīra, seven hāth, in four and two-thirds. Both are at the very top of the loka, in the same 333⅓ dhanuṣ, because that is the deepest any siddha's measure reaches.

The region is the last 333⅓ dhanuṣ of the last kośa of the last yojana of the universe; the Uttarādhyayana gives the smallest extent a siddha can have as one hāth and eight aṅgula, from the smallest body liberation is possible from. Infinite siddhas rest in the same region without crowding, because souls without matter pass through one another and none has a location relative to another.
