Samaya Kṣetra
The other name for Aḍhāī-dvīpa. Time as anyone measures it exists only inside that disc.
Days, months, seasons and years are produced by the movement of suns and moons around Meru. Inside Mānuṣottara those bodies move. Outside it they hang still and shine without turning.
So beyond the ring there is nothing for a day to be made of. The land is there, the light is there, life is there, but nothing counts. This is why the human world carries the second name Samaya Kṣetra, the field of time, and why the wheel of time turns only in Bharat Kṣetra and Airāvat Kṣetra, the two regions where history is possible at all.
The units on this ladder are therefore local in a strict sense. They describe duration everywhere, but they are measured only here.
