One breath

Prāṇa

प्राण

A single breath in and out of a healthy adult at rest. About three quarters of a second.

The Jain clock is built on the body. One breath is the base measure, 3,773 of them make a muhūrta, and everything from the muhūrta upward is derived from that. It is also called ucchvāsa-niḥśvāsa, the out-breath and in-breath together.

Seven prāṇa make a Stoka, seven stoka a Lava, and seventy-seven lava a muhūrta. Seventy-seven times seven times seven is 3,773, and the chain closes exactly.

स्तोक

Seven breaths. About five and a third seconds.

The first step above the body's own rhythm. Seven prāṇa make one stoka, and seven stoka make one Lava. The sevens are not decorative: they make the chain from breath to muhūrta close on 3,773 exactly.
