Śrāvakas

श्रावक

The laymen of the caturvidha saṅgha, one of its four companies — the part of the assembly that can be counted.

Enters by the north gate and sits in the quarter clockwise from it, one of three companies in that quarter.

Part of the caturvidha saṅgha — the fourfold community of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen — which is the one part of the assembly given as a number rather than a category. How large that number is belongs to each Tīrthaṅkara, not to the assembly: every one of the twenty-four gathered a saṅgha of a different size.
