Samaya 1 and 7 · the rod
Daṇḍa
दण्ड
The first samaya: the soul's space-points shoot up and down from the body until they touch the top and the bottom of the universe - a rod as wide as the body and fourteen rajju tall.
The rod is drawn from the body's own outline, because that is what the texts say it is: the soul extended, not moved. Above, it reaches the end of the loka past Siddhaśilā; below, the floor of the seventh earth. It is the state after the first samaya and again after the seventh, when the door has been drawn back in.
In the first samaya the soul works through the gross body alone; in the seventh, coming back, through the gross and the karmic together. The fourth is three samayas away.
