Kevali-samudghāta

केवलि-समुद्घात

In the last antarmuhūrta before nirvāṇa, an omniscient whose remaining karmas outrun the life left levels them by expanding: a rod, a door, a churn, and then, for one samaya, the whole universe - and back by the same four steps. Eight samayas. The one process in this atlas that truly happens in time.

The reason is arithmetic. At omniscience four karmas remain, the aghātiyā: lifespan, feeling, body-making and status. They must end together, and lifespan is often the shortest. So the soul levels the other three against it by spreading its space-points across the loka and shedding karma from all of them at once. The Prajñāpanā ties who must do this to six months of life remaining at the moment of omniscience, and the commentators read the rule both ways; the eight samayas themselves every account shares.

Samaya one: daṇḍa, a rod the width of the body and the full height of the Loka, top to bottom. Two: kapāṭa, a door, the rod spread east and west into a plane. Three: manthāna, the churning-stick, a second plane north and south, so the two cross. Four: loka-pūraṇa, the interstices filled, the soul on every space-point of the universe. Then five withdraws the interstices, six the second plane, seven the first, and eight brings the soul back into the body it never left.

In the first and last samaya the soul works through the gross body, in the second, sixth and seventh through the gross body mixed with the karmic, and in the third, fourth and fifth through the karmic body alone - and in those three it takes nothing in. Then the yogas are stilled one by one, the śaileśī lasts the length of five short vowels, and the soul rises.
