Kāyotsarga

कायोत्सर्ग

The abandonment of the body: standing erect, arms hanging free, the posture every standing figure in this section holds.

Tradition permits a Jina image exactly two postures: seated padmāsana — the form on the throne of the Samavasaraṇa — and standing kāyotsarga, utter stillness with the arms held slightly away from the body. That small gap between arm and torso is the posture's signature: the body set down like a garment, not used even to rest a hand on.

Bāhubali, in the most famous kāyotsarga of all, stood so long that vines climbed him. The figures of the Descent stand in this posture because the heights scripture gives are standing heights.
