Khara-kāṇḍa

खरकाण्ड

The top 16,000 yojana of the first earth: jewelled rock, and no hell in it.

Ratnaprabhā is 1,80,000 yojana thick and made of three layers. This is the uppermost, sixteen thousand yojana of the jewelled rock that gives the earth its name. The flat disc of Madhya Loka rests on its top.

Its tenants are gods, not hell-beings. In the top hundred yojana, with ten left clear above and ten below, live the eight kinds of Vyantara proper, every kind but the Rākṣasa. Below them, through the rest of the layer and on down into the paṅka, stand the mansions of the Bhavanavāsī, every class but the Asurakumāra; a thousand yojana are left clear at the top of the earth and a thousand at its bottom.

The first hells begin only two layers down, in the Ab-bahula-kāṇḍa.
