The 20 Vihārmān Jinas

विहरमान जिन

Twenty Tīrthaṅkaras are alive and teaching right now, four in each of the five Mahāvidehas.

Because Mahāvideha Kṣetra never leaves the condition of the fourth ara, it is never without a living teacher. The twenty currently present are called vihārmān — the ones moving about, as against the twenty-four of Bharat Kṣetra who have all passed.

The four in Jambūdvīpa are Sīmandhar Svāmī in Puṣkalāvatī, Yugmandhar in Vatsa, Bāhu in Nalināvatī and Subāhu in Vapra. Four more stand in each of the two Mahāvidehas of Dhātakīkhaṇḍa and each of the two of Puṣkarārdha.

All twenty share the same measurements: a lifespan of 84 lakh pūrva, a height of 500 bows, 84 gaṇadharas each, ten lakh kevalins, and a community of monks and nuns numbering two crore.

They were born within the same window of Bharat's history — between the seventeenth and eighteenth Tīrthaṅkaras — and by tradition they will all reach liberation within the same short window of the next cycle.

They are one event rather than twenty. All were born after the nirvāṇa of Kunthunātha; all took dīkṣā together after the nirvāṇa of Munisuvrata; all attained omniscience one month later; and all are still teaching. Their liberation comes in the coming caubīsī, after its seventh.

Beyond the four of Jambūdvīpa named above, scripture gives the remaining sixteen as names and no more — no city, no vijaya, no emblem — and parentage for Sīmandhara alone. Spellings vary between reciting traditions: Viśāladhara or Viśālaprabha, Bhujaṅgama or Bhujaṅgadeva, Devayaśas or Devajasa, Ajitavīrya or Ajitasena.

Dharmanātha

धर्मनाथ

Dharma by name, with the vajra — the diamond-thunderbolt — for his mark.

Born in Ratnapurī, the jewel city, carrying the adamantine emblem: the pairing of place and mark is the kind the tradition delights in.

He stood 45 dhanuṣ and lived 10 lakh years, four sāgaropama after Ananta.

Naminātha

नमिनाथ

Of Mithilā, like Malli two places before; his emblem is the blue lotus.

Nami — a name the tradition reuses freely: a vidyādhara king who served Ṛṣabha bore it too, which is why every id in this section carries its number.

He stood 15 dhanuṣ and lived 10,000 years, six lakh years after Munisuvrata.

Vimalanātha

विमलनाथ

The stainless: born in Kāmpilya, thirty sāgaropama after Vāsupūjya.

Vimala — without stain. The names of the middle twelve run through the tradition's central vocabulary: stainless, endless, dharma, peace.

He stood 60 dhanuṣ and lived 60 lakh years. His emblem is the boar.
