Mahāvideha Kṣetra

महाविदेह क्षेत्र

The great central band — 64 parts in 190, wider than everything else in Jambūdvīpa combined. A Tīrthaṅkara is always present here.

Mahāvideha runs from Niṣadha in the south to Nīla in the north and touches the ocean at both ends. It measures 33,684 4⁄19 yojana north to south and a full 1,00,000 east to west.

Mount Meru stands at its centre. The river Sītā runs east from Meru to the sea and Sītodā runs west, and between them Meru splits the region into four quarters. Each quarter holds eight vijayas, separated in turn by Vakṣaskāra mountains mountains and Antaranadī rivers. Thirty-two vijayas in all, each a self-contained world with its own Vaitāḍhya range, its own river pair and its own capital city.

South and north of Meru sit two lands of enjoyment that belong to Mahāvideha but stand outside its vijaya system: Devakuru and Uttarakuru, held between the four tusk-shaped The four Gajadanta mountains.

The doctrinal weight of this place comes from one fact. The Kāla Cakra does not turn here. Mahāvideha stays permanently in a condition matching the fourth spoke — the one in which Tīrthaṅkaras are born and teach. So there is never a moment when no one is teaching. There are twenty living Tīrthaṅkaras across the five Mahāvidehas right now, and Sīmandhar Svāmī is the one people in Bharat address.
