Aṣṭāpada

Ṛṣabha went to Aṣṭāpada to die. With ten thousand monks he undertook the fast that ends in death, and on the thirteenth of the dark half of Māgha he and all ten thousand reached Mokṣa — the first nirvāṇa of this age. His son Bharata burnt the bodies on three pyres, raised three stūpas, and built on the summit the hall Siṃhaniṣadyā, a yojana square, with the twenty-four images inside it.

Then he made the mountain unclimbable. "The King made eight steps around it in the form of terraces impossible for men to cross and a yojana apart. From that time the mountain was called Aṣṭāpada" — eight-step. Those are the eight terraces the map draws; their spacing is the text's, their widths are not recorded.

Generations later the sixty thousand sons of Sagara came to guard it and dug the moat round its foot: a thousand yojana deep, Hemacandra says, "terrifying as Pātāla" — a hundred and twenty-five times deeper than the mountain's eight terraces are tall. SCRIPTURE SCALE on the map draws that ratio. Jahnu brought the Gaṅgā to fill it, and she has been Jāhnavī since.

Hemacandra describes the mountain as "made of crystal, with great pools, like a depository of the nectar of the gods". He gives no height beyond the terraces' spacing, no distance from Ayodhyā, and no location; the modern identification with Kailāsa is a pilgrim's tradition and not printed here as a fact.
